Cascade Mt. Video Show ’15 & The Northwest Filmmakers Expo

The Cascade Mt. Video Show is back! for the last 14 years Professional Video has hosted CMVS in February of each year. CMVS showcased equipment from as many as 40 different manufacturers and hosted as many as 600 customers. This year, however, we elected to not host CMVS in February. It was a busy time for us with hot new products launching and we were feeling like the old equipment trade show was a little tired.

Instead, we’ve entered a new partnership with the Northwest Film Center. For over 41 years the Northwest Filmmakers Festival has been a premier event focused on the local filmmaking community. Since our focus on Pro Video has shifted to cinema gear, as the Northwest’s only full-line Canon Cinema EOS and Sony CineAlta dealers, it made sense to combine these events to add another filmmaker focused dimension.

The whole Festival itself is a mutli-day event that kicks off with the equipment trade show, followed by the opening night party. There is also the Filmmakers Un-Conference, and an event titled What’s Wrong With This Picture. There is also dozens of independent films that will be screened.

Come out speak with and see equipment from Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Blackmagic, Zeiss, Fujinon, Zacuto, Atomos, and more! We’ll have the new C300mkII, the new FS5, the new URSA Mini, the new DVX200, the LS300, the Shogun & Assassin, the Milvus lenses. There will also be hands-on technology workshops hosted by manufacturers that will run all day.

Tickets are $10 but you can get in for FREE by registering with the promo code nwffvip. You can read more about the Northwest Filmmakers Expo here. To register for the show and get your FREE ticket (with promo code nwffvip) please visit us here. You can buy tickets for $10 at the door on the day of the show. The event is at the Portland Art Museum on Thursday, November 12th. It will be in the Sunken Ballroom at 1119 SW Park Ave. The show will be from 10am-5pm and then will transition into the opening night party.

Alex Buono’s Art of Visual Story Telling Returns to the Northwest

The Portland-area native Alex Buono is bringing his Visual Storytelling 2 Tour back. It will expand your filmmaking abilities by immersing you in an all-day learning experience about the principles of Visual Style and Subtext. From his fast-turn around schedule as the DP of the SNL Film Unit to his role as the Co-Director/DP of the new IFC comedy series Documentary Now!, Alex is constantly challenged to recreate different looks. In this workshop, Alex will share his approach to shooting distinct visual styles with hands-on demonstrations that utilize attendees as the crew. By understanding the visual patterns for different film genres and how to manifest each style through both lighting and camerawork, you will harness the power of visual cues for your own projects.

The AVS2 tour is coming through Seattle on August 1st and through Portland on August 4th. For full ticket and registration information visit the website now. We had the pleasure of sponsoring Alex’s tour 2 summers ago in both Seattle and Portland. It was an amazing all day experience that we were lucky to be a part of once. Our excitement is through the roof to be a part of it again. Along with key sponsor Canon, Professional Video is the primary local sponsor for both of the Northwest stops, in Seattle and Portland. Sony PXW-FS7 Launch Party & Workshop

I’m extremely excited for the new Sony PXW-FS7 CineAlta camera. It’s poised to be one of the biggest cameras on the market for the next few years. To celebrate this I’ll be hosting a launch party and workshop for the FS7 sometime around the end of January. I haven’t locked down the details yet. I’m completely open to suggestions. I want to have plenty of hands-on access for as many people as possible to really play with the camera. I want to have a real-world user who’s worked with the camera talk about his or her experiences, good and bad. And I want it to be a social event with food & drink. Stay tuned for more details. If you have something you’d like to see at this event let me know, epetrie@provideoandtape.com . Post by Eric C. Petrie

Vincent Laforet Directing Motion Tour Recap

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Directing Motion tour in both Portland and Seattle. It was a great event. Professional Video was the official equipment sponsor for the Northwest stops. We brought out great manufacturers like Atomos, Freefly MoVI, and Canon. The event was full of critical film analysis. It also featured opportunities for audience members to crew several scenes and to watch a reenactment of how a scene from a modern network drama is shot. Please keep in mind that fantastic events like these are only possible with the support of local companies like Professional Video. We’ll have photos from the event on our Flickr page soon.

Directing Motion Workshop Only 2 Weeks Away

If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet its time to sign up. The Directing Motion workshop with presenter Vincent Laforet is only 2 weeks away.

One of the most important skills modern directors and DP’s are required to master is moving the camera in a dynamic and engaging way. This workshop will teach all levels of filmmakers the precise cinematic language of motion, and how to move not only the camera itself, but also content in front of the camera.

You will step away from this experience with a solid foundation in camera movement, blocking, lensing, and sequencing, and be able to direct any crew precisely and effectively to execute your vision. By understanding these principles thoroughly, you will add impact to your projects, from commercials through to webisodes, features, shorts, events, or documentaries.

Professional Video is the primary sponsor for the Northwest. We’re bringing great brands like Canon Cinema EOS, Freefly MoVI, Atomos, and more. Click here to register for the workshop. http://directingmotion.mzed.com/ticketing-options The tour comes through Seattle on June 1st and Portland on June 3rd. Post by Eric C. Petrie

Vincent Laforet

Professional Video Sponsors Vincent Laforet’s “Directing Motion” Tour

Vincent Laforet, Pulitzer Prize-winner and DGA Director, will be launching his Spring and Summer Directing Motion Tour across 30 cities. He will be in Portland on June 3rd and Seattle on June 1st. Motion is one of Laforet’s main obsessions but Laforet believes that there must be motivated and purposeful camera movements that not only captures a director’s vision but also elicits an emotional response from viewers.

Laforet’s Directing Motion Tour was created with the aspiring filmmaker in mind. For weeks Laforet studied 100 of the best films, analyzing extensively, the motion magic created by directors such Hitchcock, Spielberg, Scorsese, Welles, and many others. After 300 hours of research, with over 400 examples to share, Laforet designed a six theme daytime workshop followed by an applied theory evening seminar catering to filmmakers of all levels.

Laforet stresses that participating students will be able to put what they are learning into practice with some of the most advanced cinema technology. The techniques taught by Laforet can be applied with minimal equipment to any film project such as interview setups, promo shoots, live-event coverage, short films, and documentaries.

As always Professional Video will be on hand showing off the latest in digital cinema technology. We’ll also be doing some kind of customer prize give away. Register for the tour here. Post by Eric C. Petrie

CMVS ’14: Sony CineAlta Certification End to End Production

Sony is extremely proud to be bringing their full-scale Hollywood CineAlta certification course to Portland for the Cascade Mt. Video Show. We’ve taken an 8 hour course and condensed it to 2 hours for CMVS ’14. This is the very same training the Sony provides to Hollywood D.P.s and camera operators so they can gain a better understanding of the tools they need to create their art. This course is presented as a complete hands-on training class. You and your classmates will go hands on shooting 4K RAW with Sony F55 CineAlta cameras. After shooting your “movie” scene you’ll enter the post production phase where you’ll get first hand experience with managing RAW data and color grading in DaVinci Resolve. After post production wraps we’re going to the big screen. Your footage will be screened, analyzed, and enjoyed on a cinema-level 4K projector, the very same kind used in theaters across the country. Shy of attending the Sony training in Los Angeles this is a rare opportunity. The best Sony technology certification is coming to you.

The presentation will take place on February 26th at 1:00pm. You can register for the show here and attend for free.
