Today Canon released new firmware for the EOS C100. The update address two issues. First it improves continues autofocus compatibility with certain photo lenses. Second it, and this is the big one, it address an issue that has existed since the release of the C100 with audio polarity. Instagram added support for sharing 15-second video clips yesterday, and the feature has been available in the App Store and Google Play for a few days now. Instagram has 130,000 million users. Enough videos were uploaded within the first eight hours of release that it would take you a year to watch them all. “At peak, Instagram users uploaded 40 hours of video per minute. The climactic moment came Thursday night as the Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Finals,” according to CNET. That’s a lot of video.
When it comes to us video pros we need to realize that there’s a reason clips are 15 seconds long. Instagram seemingly chose to go with a length that’s more than double Vine’s six seconds for a specific reason: ads. Video ads have already been in the works for Facebook, which owns Instagram, and 15 seconds is the exact format that a lot of big advertisers use for TV already.
An Instagram with 15-second videos is right in the sweet spot for Facebook: It’s mobile, it’s video, and at that length, it means that advertisers can drop in their short television spots without even modifying them. This is an important but overlooked feature of online video ads, when compared to other kinds like banner and search: the ability to re-use the same creative on which advertisers have already spent so much money. Sony has issued another firmware update for the F5 and F55 digital cinema cameras. This latest update is version 1.15. Here’s the list of changes, fixes, and features. The firmware can be downloaded here. Post by Eric C. Petrie
1. Startup time
After 3 seconds of power on, video signal is displayed on the viewfinder (DVF-L350, DVF-EL100 or DVF-L700) which is connected to the camera via DVF interface cable. However it takes about 13 seconds to display all the information which is set to “ON” on the “Output Display” page under “Video” menu. Any key operations including REC button in 13 seconds are disregarded.
2. Length of clip for playback
The camera can NOT play back the clip which is longer than 170,000 frame of 4K XAVC 23.98p, 118 minute. Color bars or black picture can be recorded over 120 minute but it cannot be played back.
3. Payback of edited MPEG2 HD422 clip
The camera cannot playback MXF file with offset. In other words, a MPEG2 HD422 clip with IN and OUT points edited by Content Browser. * An XAVC clip with IN and OUT points which is stored to correct location on the SxS memory card can be played back because it’s NOT an MXF file with offset.
4. Other operational restrictions
4.1 Display update rate
Update rate of time data and audio level meter on the sub display panel gets slower when displaying MENU or audio status window. However peak hold function displays maximum level correctly.
4.2 Assignable buttons
The camera has 4 assignable buttons and 8 kinds of functions (Marker/ Zebra/ Peaking/ Display/ Focus Magnifier/ VF Mode/ Rec/ S&Q Motion) can be assigned to each buttons. Since current available viewfinders i.e. DVF-L350, L700 and EL100, have their own Focus Magnifier button, Focus Magnify function cannot be assigned.
5.1 Warning display for remaining battery level of backup cell does not work.
5.2 “4K/2K to HD Conv.” setting on “Output Setting” page under “Video Menu” when RAW recording mode does not work. This setting will be available with next version upgrade.
6. Operational restrictions of SxS memory card on the PC
Content Browser must be used for deleting or adding any clips on an SxS memory card. Deleting any clips under Clip folder on the card by direct access from a PC by either USB connection between the camera and the PC, SBAC-US10/20 USB reader/writer breaks its control data. Then the card cannot be accepted by the camera.

2. The image shown in the viewfinder is “blurry” or “not steady”. (Occurs if wear progresses.)

1. EOS-1D X: If the sixth digit from the left of the serial number is “1”, “2”, “3”, “4”, “5”, “6” or “7”, the phenomena described above may occur.
2. EOS-1D C: If the sixth digit from the left of the serial number is “1”, the phenomena described above may occur.
NOTE: If the camera’s battery compartment contains one of the markings illustrated below, the camera is NOT affected by the phenomena described above even if the sixth digit of the serial number is one of the numbers mentioned above. NOTE: For the moment at least this camera has been announced as Japan only. However it shows that this or something like this will probably come to the U.S. in the not-too-distant future.
JVC has announced the latest edition to their 4k camera line, and this time it features interchangeable lenses. The JVC GY-HMQ30 will capture up to 60p in 4K using an MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec. It has an 8 megapixel 1.25″ sensor, which works out at approximately 2.5 crop compared to full frame. Thats the same size as the Blackmagic 2k camera.
The Nikon F lens mount is a great addition over the fixed lens version, the GY-HMQ10. However it appears the new camera will not support auto focus. F-mount means that manual iris Nikon lenses (which they still make today) will work perfectly. Also Zeiss has used F-mount forma long time. It records to 4 SDHC cards, each card recording a quarter of the screen to achieve 4k resolution. 4X 32gig cards offer around 2 hours of footage.
Final Cut users will be happy to know that JVC’s clip manager provides support for Apple ProRes 422. Audio is captured via an in-built stereo mic, plus 2 XLR inputs. It also provides +48v phantom power. Other features include a full 4k time-lapse function (1,5 or 40 second intervals), and a Full HD trimming function. This allows you to pick an area of the 4k image using the touchscreen, and record a quarter sized crop at 1920X1080 resolution.
The camera is shipping soon in Japan at the equivalent retail price of $18,000. This is surely subject to change, and will likely creep down as the camera comes to the U.S.
With 4K fast becoming the standard for companies’ flagship lines, it’s seems pretty clear where the industry is heading over the next few years, especially with computing companies such as Apple now integrating 4K into their new releases.
